Best local walks near Glyntawe Outdoor Centre

Nestled in the heart of the spectacular Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons), Glyntawe Outdoor Centre is ideally placed for some of the finest walking routes in South Wales. Whether you are visiting with a school group, family or walking club, there is something for every ability level.

Here are four of our favourite local routes to explore in 2026.

Henrhyd Falls – A Waterfall Classic

Distance: Approx. 1 mile
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Perfect for: Families and short scenic walks

Just a short drive from the centre, Henrhyd Falls is the highest waterfall in South Wales. The route is relatively short but feels wonderfully dramatic as you descend through woodland to reach the falls.

Visitors can even walk behind the waterfall… always a memorable experience.

Four Falls Walk – Waterfall Country

Distance: 4–5 miles (circular)
Difficulty: Moderate
Perfect for: Active groups and adventurous walkers

The famous Four Falls Walk near Ystradfellte showcases several spectacular cascades, including Sgwd yr Eira, where you can walk behind the curtain of water.

The terrain can be uneven and muddy, so suitable footwear is essential – but the scenery is worth every step.

Pen y Fan – The Highest Peak in South Wales

Distance: 4–8 miles (depending on route)
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
Perfect for: Confident walkers and training groups

Standing at 886 metres, Pen y Fan is the highest peak in southern Britain. On a clear day, the views stretch across Mid Wales and beyond.

For visiting school or youth groups, this is often a highlight of any residential stay – a real sense of achievement at the summit.

Llyn y Fan Fach – Myth and Mountain

Distance: 4–6 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Perfect for: Scenic ridge walking

Llyn y Fan Fach sits beneath the dramatic escarpment of the Black Mountain. Steeped in Welsh folklore, this glacial lake offers one of the most picturesque walks in the National Park.

It is slightly quieter than some of the central Beacons routes, making it ideal for groups seeking a more peaceful experience.
